What an amazing garden 12 of us visited in Cargreen near Saltash. Highcroft Gardens & Nursery, owned by the Richards family for four generations consists of 3 acres of varied, highly colourful, artistically designed spaces.
We were welcomed by Mr.& Mrs. Richards. Barry Richards then gave an introductory talk followed by a guided tour beginning in the Japanese garden with it’s low growing, wide spreading red Acer. Winding paths then led us past interesting shrubs into the ‘Hot Border’, a compact garden covered in many herbaceous plants covered in all shades of red, orange & yellow. Through the ornamental grasses border to the Arboretum with many trees including one hundred different Camellias! There’s a collection of 25 different Hydrangeas & a blue border including impressive Agapanthus. We then arrived at the top of a wide sloping garden, the ‘Prairie’. The view was stunning. An unimaginable combination of colour & form consisting of herbaceous perennials, low shrubs, colourful swaying grasses & more. Happily we had another opportunity to enjoy the prairie on our way back up to the ‘Lawn Borders’ with their collections of Lobelias & Crocosmias, the original part of Highcroft. The final part of our tour was to the raised bed vegetable garden full of perfect vegies then out through the plant sales area which many of us couldn’t resist!
Back at the Methodist church next door (where we had parked), Mrs. Richards served us
with tea & biscuits.
A truly inspirational NGS garden, well worth another visit.
